NDAA Reauth Includes Women and the Draft

No civilized country drafts its women.

On June 14th, the U.S. Senate voted 85-13 to approve a version of the proposed National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 (S. 2943) including a provision which, if also approved by the House of Representatives and signed into law by the President, would extend draft registration to women. Bernie Sanders and Barbara Boxer were the only Senators absent from this vote.

The bill was sponsored by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) who is facing a tough re-election campaign.

In addition to Senators Boxer (D-CA) and Sanders (I-VT) not voting, these are the 13 Senators who voted NO.

Crapo (R-ID)
Cruz (R-TX)
Gillibrand (D-NY)
Leahy (D-VT)
Lee (R-UT)
Markey (D-MA)
Merkley (D-OR)
Paul (R-KY)
Reid (D-NV)
Risch (R-ID)
Sasse (R-NE)
Warren (D-MA)
Wyden (D-OR)

The bill would have to be reconciled with the House version and then sent to the President for signing.
