National Wildlife Federation: Climate Change Causing “Mental Illness”

“The Psychological Effects of Global Warming on the United States: And Why the U.S. Mental Health Care System Is Not Adequately Prepared” by Kevin J. Coyle, JD and Lise Van Susteren, MD, National Wildlife Federation Climate education Program With Support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Copyright © 2011 National Wildlife Federation is a bizarre 60-page document that asserts the urgency of climate change and its effects will put a strain on the mental health system.

While we have heard outrageous claims that those who do NOT believe that climate change is as urgent as it is said to be are ‘mentally ill’, we have never heard that climate change itself is causing mental illness as claimed in this document.

As expected it contains all the usual memes and buzzwords: “suicide, social justice, child abuse” and the worst assertion we’ve hear yet, that “poor people need professionals and the mental health care community to help them voice their outrage.” [p34]

Whew.
