NHGOP STATEMENT ON OBAMA’S NEW FEDERAL SALES TAX PROPOSAL

CONCORD – Former New Hampshire Governor and Republican State Committee Chairman John H. Sununu released the following statement on today President Barack Obama’s proposal for a disastrous new Federal sales tax (Value Added Tax or VAT). A top Obama advisor announced yesterday that Democrats are discussing a new “European-style” national sales tax to pay for their reckless spending:

“President Obama’s decision to consider a proposal for a new Federal sales tax is just another indication that the Democrats are completely out-of-touch with the challenges facing working families. During these tough economic times, the last thing our country needs are the failed, European-style tax policies that will depress growth, kill jobs and impact every corner of the private sector.

“Granite Staters have consistently expressed their opposition to any sales tax, yet Paul Hodes, Carol Shea-Porter and Jeanne Shaheen support a reckless fiscal agenda that will create exploding deficits and force a crushing federal sales tax on the middle class. It’s obvious that these elitist Democrats have deliberately decided to ignore their constituents and arrogantly shove their big government agenda down America’s throat. New Hampshire voters will not forget their disgraceful behavior in November.”
