I specifically object to the following misleading items in your press release.

You state, “It’s a disgrace for an organization to deliberately try to prevent people from getting help from their elected representatives”. We had the good fortune to have a private citizen videotape (available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CJR4PfhSLY and www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBZ7pHfMOyw ) the event in question. The video evidence clearly shows that the protesters you condemn were courteous, located at least fifty yards from and on the opposite side of the parking lot from the entrance to the facility that your staff person was using for constituent services. There is no evidence of any of the protesters ‘deliberately’ trying to prevent people from getting needed help.

You state that “Their rights have been trampled on” by the presences of individuals expressing their political views. Again, the video evidence referenced above clearly shows that your constituents who were there to express their first amendment rights opposing your position where not denying any person their rights. Your assertion clearly seeks to intimidate your constituents who do not agree with you by inaccurately accusing them of horrific actions in denying others rights while you attempt to silence them.
Your press release is misleading in that you present a picture of only a crowd who opposes your support of what some call “Obamacare”. What you fail to mention is that your supporters where also there protesting in support of Obamacare. Your press release very clearly condemns the action of protesting your office hours as a denial of rights attack. As such, how can you justify condemning the citizens of Hampstead, your constituents, who wish to express their political policy desires and not have the same condemnation for protesters on your side from Massachusetts, not your constituents, who were doing the exact same thing? Furthermore, as one of the highest ranking Democrats in the state of New Hampshire how can you not condemn that fact that a Democrat State Rep from outside of Hampstead was trampling on your constituents’ rights as you chose to characterize protesting at your “office hours”?

Your constituents have a right to express their views on the policy to you and me as their public servants. Your press release condemns your constituents for expressing their views unless they agree with your position, and rewards, through the absence of condemnation, individuals who are not your constituents for doing the exact same thing but in support of your views. The voters of Hampstead deserve better than this from their United States Senator. If you are truly interested in what your constituents in Hampstead believe is the correct course for our country, then I invite you to hold a town hall meeting for Hampstead residents, as this is the only proper correction that can be made to the gross injustice done to voters in Hampstead who do not agree with you.

Thank you for your time and I hope you will come to Hampstead to speak to find out what the actual voters of Hampstead think is the correct path forward for our country.

Sincerely,

Don Van Patten
New Hampshire State Representative
Rockingham District 8

Cc:
Union Leader
Eagle Tribune
Concord Monitor
Carriage Town News
Derry News
Seacoastonline.com

Thank you Representative Van Patten for speaking out for those of us who really had our civil rights trampled at Hampstead…where we were prevented from getting help from the Shaheen office while those from outside the state were allowed to protest without comment.
